Breaking news for World Peace! Yesterday, April 2, 2013, on Day 63 of the Season for NonViolence, the United Nations General Assembly approved a landmark treaty regulating the international arms trade. Only Syria, North Korea, and Iran voted against it. The global arms trade does about $60 billion annually. The UN Secretary-General Ban Kimoon said, “This is a victory for the world’s people. The Arms Trade Treaty will make it more difficult for deadly weapons to be diverted into the illicit market… It will be a powerful new tool in our efforts to prevent grave human rights abuses or violations of international humanitarian law.” The treaty will take effect after 50 countries ratify it.
People who cultivate peace are having an effect on the world. So break out your celebratory beverages and toast to progress! Now here is AGNT’s meditation for the last full day of the 16th annual Season for Nonviolence:
DAY 64 Apr. 3: The thought for today is CELEBRATION. Margaret Mead said “[N]ever doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
Nonviolence is building the courage to speak and act with respect, reverence and compassion for our own being. Rejoice in the work that you have done. CELEBRATE the journey that you have made with countless others who believe that every individual can move the world in the direction of peace with their nonviolent choice and action.
Today: I CELEBRATE my knowledge and maturity, my choice of nonviolence, and the journey I have chosen.
