Welcome to the 44th Day of AGNT’s Season for NonViolence (SNV).  The SNV goes through early April.  One trait or quality is considered each day, that leads us to BE the peace we want to see.  Today, we consider COOPERATION.

In many organizations, it is an ongoing joke that if you want an initiative for change to go away, you give it to a committee. When a topic is given to a committee, COOPERATION is necessary for any meaningful result to happen.  No, I did not mention Congress.  COOPERATION works when there is goodwill, and especially if the stakeholders share goals and values.

Recently, I had a joyful local example of successful COOPERATION.  As a longtime Board member of my HOA, I have been doing my best to build mutual acquaintance and goodwill within the community.  One sunny day, I was delighted to find a handsome table and chairs by a dumpster, free for anyone to take.  If no one adopted the set, the HOA would have to pay a vendor to cart the furniture away.  But here was the opportunity for a double dividend:  we needed more furniture for the Clubhouse, and if we adopted the furniture, we would not have to pay to have it hauled away.  I rang a neighbor for help, and he was delighted to take a few minutes to help get the furniture 100 yards into the Clubhouse.  That neighbor also called a neighbor, and on the way to the dumpster, they picked up another neighbor to help.  So each person took one piece of furniture, and in 10 minutes, the Clubhouse had free new furniture.  Yes, some scratches need to be repaired.  But we enjoyed that small expedition and shared a bit of fellowship; my neighbors felt included, as they were.  I bought a few new throw pillows for the Clubhouse, and everyone is pleased at how cheery the formerly sterile room has become.  It got that way through COOPERATION.

Here, then, is AGNT’s contemplation for Day 44 of the Season for NonViolence (SNV):

DAY 44 Mar. 14: The thought for today is COOPERATION.  When we work together, we are stronger than when we work alone.   When we find ways that we can cooperate more effectively with the people in our family or workplace, school or community, we are tearing down walls of separation; we are contributing to a nonviolent culture.

Today:  Find a very heavy object.  Try to pick it up by yourself.  Now ask 3 or 4 other people to assist.  How did working together with other people help make this task easier for you?
