AGNT’s Season for NonViolence (SNV) is very much about establishing a different consciousness, first within individuals, then in communities, and ultimately throughout the global community. Today, we consider COMPASSION. How compassionate do you feel you are? When you have felt down or discouraged, have others been compassionate with you? How did they express COMPASSION?
I had an exquisite experience of compassion one day, when I was in grad school. I was very ill but had to go to a nearby grocery store. Waiting for the cashier, I felt so weak that I was concerned I would fall, and I actually sat down on the concrete floor to gather myself. I closed my eyes and prayed for strength. I felt a tiny hand pat my shoulder. I opened my eyes to see a 1-year old child standing there, looking concerned. Her COMPASSION made my day. Her caring uplifted me. I said, “Thank you! And don’t worry about me. I’m just sick. I’ll be well soon. Thank you!” She looked relieved. Her wordless kindness meant so much to me.
Perhaps you have been compassionate with others, in ways you didn’t even think about at the time, but which meant much to someone who was discouraged.
Here, now, is AGNT’s meditation for Day 46:
DAY 46 Mar. 16: The thought for today is COMPASSION. Mother Teresa implored us to “find someone who thinks he is alone and let him know that he is not.”
“If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.”

“A human being is part of the whole, called by us ‘universe,’ a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separate from the rest – a kind of optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”
Compassion is about both relieving suffering and about celebration (which also relieves suffering by putting it in a context of gratitude). With compassion comes a greatness of heart. Compassion arises when we allow our heart to be touched by the pain and needs of others.
Today: I will engage compassion to lead my actions, my words and my life.
